OUR STORY
WUNGURA DEFINITION?
Wungura is a traditional word from the Dhauwurd Wurrung language group of the Gunditjmara People of south-west Victoria.
Wungura meaning: "Quick/Fast"
Our original aim is to produce active wear and to be "Quick/Fast" perfectly fits the theme of being active and can be used in many different scenarios within life.
COMMUNITY ASPIRATIONS
Wungura aims to have a real strong presence in the community, but not just where we are based but around the world!
We believe our brand can grow into such a strong business but not only a business' but a inspiring space for all!
With the ultimate dream to join the ranks of bigger clothing lines. While achieving many motivational things along the way!
With such as strong motivating history and what our brands built on we believe we can go all the way!
Every time you wear our brand out and about, you are helping us reach our ultimate goal!
INSPIRATION
Our authentic artworks are inspired by our direct blood line to the Lake Condah possum skin cloak.
Created in 1872 by 7 Gunditj men on the Lake Condah mission during its operation, the cloak is believed to be the 2nd oldest known cloak in Australia. 50 possum skins with etched designs and then painted with ochre.
Our designs are inspired by those very etchings and are recreated in a modern way and shown within most of our clothing!
ARTIST
Wunguras designs are designed by the best present day Gunditjmara artist.
Tom Day a Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Wemba Wemba man has worked many deadly art projects and has a bloodline to Gunditjmara artistry and to Gunditj Mirring (country) aswell growing up on the Budj Bim lava flow has contributed to his designs and to our clothing as well.
Along with his cousin and nephew, Jason and Jakobe putting all the artworks together to create these amazing clothing items, we cant wait for what else is to come!
OUR FOUNDATIONS
Wungura clothing may of only launched in 2021... But we acknowledge the work that has been done before us so we can build a brand on the foundations of a long legacy of determination, ingenuity, resilience and hope.
This legacy sets us apart from most brands.
Wungura is a brand for all, from a humble community this humble brand is ready to be worn/shown around the the world!
MEET US
Wungura is lead by Jason Walker and son Jakobe Walker a Gunditjmara and Yorta Yorta duo operating from Heywood Victoria.
Both had a vision to create a clothing brand that would inspire the community around them for a better future. To also engage people around them in a brand thats built on foundations of a long history of ingenuity hope and resilliance.
It all started as an idea/dream and was finally put into action during the COVID19 lockdowns as we launched Wungura Clothing website in early November 2021.
